Gin, Still & Mill to Run May 5th at ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture

Staff Report From Tifton CEO

Friday, April 27th, 2018

For the first time all year, the cotton gin, turpentine still and sawmill will all run on the same day on May 5 at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village.

“Our visitors that day can enjoy a seldom seen piece of South Georgia history during our annual turpentine still operation and discharge,” Museum Director Garrett Boone said.  “Guests will see up close and personal the age-old process of turpentine distilling that is central to South Georgia’s cultural heritage. The still will be running throughout the day and discharging closer to 4 p.m.

“Guests will also be treated to steam powered sawmill demonstrations, cotton gin demonstrations and sheep shearing.  Sheep shearing will take place at 10 a.m.  The sawmill and cotton gin will be operating from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to step back in time and get a taste of days gone by.”

Boone said all guests can climb aboard the 1914 Vulcan Steam train at the Country Store as it issues its long and distinctive whistle while it welcomes visitors for a ride to the Historic Village.

“Kids and adults all enjoy riding the train,” Boone said.  “People who live near the Museum hear that whistle, and they know the train is transporting guests from all over the world back in time to the 1890s.”

Local growers and producers will be offering fresh picked produce from 9 a.m. until noon as well as hand-made goods for sale at the Wiregrass Farmers Market located under the pole barn behind the Country Store.  The Market is open every Saturday in the spring.

Museum Curator and assistant director Polly Huff said the brand new “Glory Days” exhibit featuring sports memorabilia from ABAC’s past will also be available for viewing in the Museum Gallery.  The centerpiece for the exhibit is the original Golden Stallion statue.

Admission for the day is $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $5 for children 5–16 years of age, and free for children under five.  For more information, interested persons can contact the Country Store at (229) 391-5205.
