Georgia is the No. 8 Most Food-Wasteful State

Wednesday, November 17th, 2021

How much food will Americans gobble up on Turkey Day? Not as much as they'll throw out. Thanksgiving might be the tastiest holiday, but it's also the waste-iest. About 30–40% of the national food supply goes to waste each year, and 200 million pounds of that waste comes from Thanksgiving turkeys alone.

Some states contribute more to that total than others.

LawnStarter collected data on the 50 states to find 2022’s States That Waste the Most Food. We looked at how much food each state wastes, how much it repurposes, and what measures it has in place to reduce food loss.

How does Georgia stack up?

Georgia's Rank for Some Key Metrics (1 = Worst)

  • Quantity of Wasted Food - 7th Worst

  • Share of Donated Food - 8th Worst

  • Presence of Food Waste Disposal Bans - Worst

  • Presence of Food Sharing Program - Worst
