ABAC Museum Apprenticeship Program Previews in February

Staff Report From Tifton CEO

High school students who want to get a taste of the past while gaining valuable experience for the future are invited to attend a Youth Apprentice Program preview event on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. or Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village.

Lynn McDonald, the volunteer coordinator for the Museum, said the program is designed for youth ages 14-18.  The previews will be held in the East Conference Room in the Main Exhibit Building.  Students can choose which preview best suits their schedule.

“The students are invited to bring a parent and learn about this year-round volunteer program,” McDonald said.  “We will share details of the program, and current participants will be on hand to talk about their personal experiences with the volunteer program.”

Youth apprentices agree to contribute a minimum of 30 hours during the summer and another 30 hours during the school year helping with interpretation and special events.   Many of the students like the program so much that they spend more than the required hours at the Museum.

“This program is designed to involve young people in our volunteer program and give the students work experience,” McDonald said.  “Fun is also part of the program.  Some apprentices have not known any of the other students at the start of the summer only to make some very good friends while participating.”

McDonald said students who are interested in history, acting, and communications are good candidates for this program; however, students with varied backgrounds and interests are welcome to participate.
“The Preview Event generally is one hour in length,” McDonald said.  “Applications for the program will be available during the session.”

Interested students should call McDonald at (229) 391-5223 or email her at [email protected] prior to attending the event.
