Georgia Power believes in the value of connecting elementary school students with knowledge about agriculture and natural resources.  That’s the message delivered from a recent $2,500 donation from Georgia Power to the Destination Ag program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village.

“Destination Ag continues to grow thanks to the support of several of Georgia’s biggest industries,” Museum Director Garrett Boone said.  “Destination Ag reached over 6,000 pre-k through second grade students last year.  Thanks to Georgia Power, the program can add valuable educational resources which will enhance each student’s experience.”

Boone said that Destination Ag’s goal is “to provide an interactive learning environment focusing on agriculture and natural resources, allowing participants a richer understanding of where their food, fiber and shelter originates.”

The program prides itself on the hands-on activities presented to students which allow them to have a fun, immersive experience while connecting agriculture to their everyday lives.

In the past, the partnership with Georgia Power allowed Destination Ag to purchase one of its most beloved interactive activities, an erosion table. The erosion table consists of moldable sand and miniature plastic farm animals and buildings.  It allows students to build farms, hills, terraces and rivers and then see how water erosion affects the land.

“The visual representation of erosion and the hands-on nature of this activity has proven to be a memorable experience not only for the students but also for the parents and teachers who attend the Destination Ag field trips,” Boone said.

Boone said Destination Ag’s mission of connecting students to how agriculture impacts their everyday lives would not be achievable if it were not for valuable partnerships with corporate entities such as Georgia Power; companies intent on educating future generations.
