Monica Thornton Joins The Nature Conservancy in Georgia as Executive Director

Following an extensive search process which attracted dozens of qualified applicants across the country, Monica Thornton has joined The Nature Conservancy in Georgia in the role of Executive Director. As Executive Director, Thornton now oversees a conservation portfolio which includes 21 properties totaling more than 30,000 acres. She will also lead the execution of TNC’s next strategic plan and the pursuit of the organization’s 2030 goals.
“Conservation is a long game, and our success as an organization and a movement depends on continuity, stability, vision and collaboration,” said Thornton. “It is an honor to continue serving Georgia’s people and nature alongside so many amazing partners across our beautiful state. It is only by working together that we can achieve our ambitious vision of a future where people and nature thrive.”
Thornton is a seventh generation Georgian with decades of experience in local non-profit work with organizations such as The Georgia Conservancy, Piedmont Park Conservancy, CDC Foundation, and Women in Technology. Throughout her career, Monica has proven herself to be one of the most committed defenders of Georgia’s natural resources. Most recently, she served as Association Advancement Director with the Georgia Municipal Association.

Thornton is very involved in the community and serves on several boards, including the advisory board of Earth Share Georgia, the International Women's think Tank and as a founding board member of Ventures Atlanta. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia State University in TV/Film and an Associate's degree in Marketing.
