“Snakes on a Plane?”  No, but close.  For the third consecutive year, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will host “Snakes in the Stacks” at noon on March 6 in the Baldwin Library.

Dr. Vanessa Lane, assistant professor of wildlife at ABAC, doesn’t plan on releasing any of the reptiles into the aisles of the library but she will display several nonvenomous species from her 40-snake collection. This event is open to the public at no charge.

“Snakes are among the most misunderstood and feared animals on the planet despite the fact that the vast majority of species are harmless and beneficial to humans,” Lane said. “Snakes in the Stacks is a fun event aimed at showing individuals the amazing characteristics and interesting personalities of live snakes in a safe and controlled setting.”

The event will feature an educational talk and demonstrations by Lane, as well as the opportunity for members of the audience to interact with the snakes.  This favored occasion drew a crowd of over 100 people in 2017 as members of the community and ABAC faculty, staff, and students attended.

“We will cover topics on snake anatomy, snake behavior, snake conservation, and how to react if you encounter a snake in the wild,” Lane said.
