Students enrolled for the upcoming fall semester who desire to take full advantage of what Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has to offer can apply for on campus housing.  Move-in days for the new academic year are scheduled for Aug. 8-9 by appointment.  Fall term classes begin Aug. 13.  

Dr. Chris Kinsey, Director of Residence Life, says limited spaces are available in ABAC Place and ABAC Lakeside for students seeking a place to live for the fall semester.  

“We are 90 percent full and expect all rooms to be claimed by the end of summer,” Kinsey said. “I encourage students to contact the office as soon as possible to ensure a spot is still available and to successfully be matched with or to choose the roommate of their choice.”

On-campus housing at ABAC provides a space for 1,324 students annually.  ABAC Place is a “home away from home” to 835 upperclassmen, and ABAC Lakeside serves as an engaging living experience for 489 freshman students.

“There are some structural differences between Place and Lakeside,” said Kinsey.  “ABAC Place is apartment-style housing with four individual rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and common room.  Lakeside is a suite-style setting consisting of either two private bedrooms with one shared bathroom or two shared bedrooms with two shared bathrooms and a kitchenette.”

Kinsey says there are many advantages to living on campus.

“Students have more opportunity for engagement with their peers and are provided the safety of a secure living environment with access control, on-call live-in staff, and multiple layers of security,” Kinsey said. “Also, students are in close proximity to classes and receive academic support, and social, civic, and health programming for student enrichment.”

There are some additional perks that include expanded cable television, dedicated Wi Fi with 24-hour support, the On-Demand movie channel, free laundry, a game room, and over $10,000 in programming with 300 activities each year. Students also have access to the Thrash Wellness Center.

“Living on campus is important for students because it allows them to take advantage of the full college experience,” Kinsey said. “When the students are outside the classroom, it is important for them to engage with industry leaders and peers within their chosen field. Living on campus allows them to take full advantage of those interactions.”

Freshman students who live more than 50 miles away from ABAC are required to live in one of the on-campus residences, but any student can live on campus.  An online application and application fee of $235 are required for admittance into campus housing.

While all rooms are completely furnished, Kinsey advises that students should have a “Top 10” list of extra items when they move to campus.  These items include a computer, a television, kitchen supplies, a shower curtain, linens, window curtains, a garbage can with trash bags, a vacuum and broom, and basic cleaning supplies.

 ABAC students serving as community assistants play an important role at both ABAC Lakeside and ABAC Place.  There will be 35 community assistants this fall semester between the two locations.

“The CAs are the frontline staff and serve in an on-call rotation to support full-time on-call staff,” said Kinsey. “They are there for every student living on campus and wear a number of different hats including counselors, problem-solvers, and mediators.”

Just don’t bring your favorite four-legged friend unless it’s a horse which can be stabled near the ABAC Rodeo Arena on a space available basis.

 “As far as pets are concerned, only fish in small tanks are permitted,” Kinsey said.
