Staff Report From Tifton CEO

Friday, January 24th, 2020

If you have been diagnosed with heart disease or stroke, you are a Champion and we invite you to a free lunch-and-learn event on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 12:00 pm, at the Tift Regional Community Events Center. Cardiologist Dr. Paul Murray with Affinity Clinic will discuss "What You Need to Know About Stroke and Stroke Prevention."

Stroke kills about 140,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 out of every 20 deaths. A stroke, also known as a brain attack, occurs when blood flow to the brain stops, and the brain cells in the area begin to die. A stroke can affect the entire body. Acting fast can make a big difference for someone who’s having a stroke. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) emphasizes that getting emergency help within an hour can prevent long-term disability or death.

You may be reluctant to call emergency services if you aren’t sure whether someone’s having a stroke, but people who get treatment sooner have a major advantage. People who are treated with a blood clot-dissolving drug within 4.5 hours of symptoms have a greater chance of recovering without major disability, according to guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA). Dr. Murray will discuss stroke and its prevention, symptoms, and treatment options.

This event, sponsored by the Tift Regional Heart and Vascular Center, is free and includes a complimentary meal. Seating is limited and registration is required. Please register in the Calendar of Events section or call 229-353-6316. The Tift Regional Community Events Center is located in Tifton at 1657 S. Carpenter Road (connected to the Tiftarea YMCA).
