Staff Report

Monday, December 19th, 2022

The events of the past decade — and, more recently, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic — brought about a number of important changes within the U.S. labor market.

To better understand the pace and extent of these changes, CommercialCafe’s new study used the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to discover the fastest-growing jobs across the U.S. during the last decade. We also mapped the dominant industry for each of the 48 states in the contiguous United States, according to both percentage share and total number employees in a given occupation.

Here are some highlights:

  • The fastest growing job in Georgia by percentage was Agricultural Equipment Operator, which increased by 276%, or by 690 workers since 2012.

  • Farming-related jobs were dominant in only one more state apart from Georgia – in Maryland, the fastest growing job was Farmworkers and Laborers (Crop, Nursery, and Greenhouse), which grew by 287%.

  • Overall, the three sectors with the fastest-growing occupations across the country were healthcare, business, and industrial.

  • The fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. (by percentage share) in the past decade were in solar, wind, and healthcare industries.
