Southwell recently honored Caroline Conger and Allison Gibbs with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s international program that recognizes the exceptional, compassionate care nurses provide every day.
Caroline Conger, a nurse with Tift Regional Medical Center’s obstetrics team, was nominated for the calm, compassionate care she provided during a patient’s emergency C-section. From the moment the patient arrived in the ER with dangerously high blood pressure, Caroline acted swiftly—identifying a concern with the baby’s heartbeat and calling in the physician. After surgery, Caroline stayed by the patient’s side, helping with pain management and taking photos of the newborn so the mother wouldn't miss those first moments.
“Caroline’s quick thinking, empathy, and ability to connect with patients on such a personal level is what makes her an extraordinary nurse,” said Julie Williams, Director of Perinatal Services. “She embodies the heart of nursing and consistently brings comfort and reassurance during critical times.”
Allison Gibbs, a nurse at Southwell Health and Rehabilitation in Adel, was nominated by a fellow employee who observed her ongoing kindness and dignity-centered care. Allison was described as someone who treats every resident as if they were her own family. Her warm demeanor and attentiveness to both residents and family members stood out as hallmarks of her compassionate approach.
“Allison consistently goes the extra mile to ensure her patients feel respected, cared for, and seen,” said Sandi Martin, Director of Patient Care at Southwell Medical. “Her compassionate approach and attention to the emotional needs of our residents truly make a difference in their daily lives.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation, based in Glen Ellen, CA, was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The extraordinary care Patrick and his family received from nurses inspired the creation of the DAISY Award as a way to recognize nurses who go above and beyond for their patients.
The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been adopted by healthcare facilities around the world. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues and are selected by a committee of nurses at Southwell. Awards are presented quarterly in surprise ceremonies, and recipients receive a certificate of recognition, an engraved plaque, and heartfelt appreciation from their peers.
“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Tonia Garrett, Chief Nursing Officer for Southwell. “Nurses like Caroline and Allison reflect the values we hold dear—compassion, excellence, and human connection. We’re grateful for their dedication to those we serve.”
