CareSource, a nationally recognized nonprofit managed care organization serving more than 430,000 Georgians, has partnered with Volunteers of America (VOA) Southeast to expand access to affordable housing across rural Georgia. The partnership was highlighted today with a ribbon cutting at Magnolia Villas, a new affordable housing community for adults 55+ in Tift County.

Magnolia Villas, managed by Fairway Management, is part of CareSource’s larger $1 million investment in partnership with VOA Southeast to expand affordable housing in rural Georgia. This development is a direct outcome of the investment and highlights CareSource’s commitment to go beyond traditional health care to address social determinants of health.

“We know that when households have to dedicate a significant portion of their monthly income to housing, they may not be able to afford things like preventative health care treatments, prescriptions or healthy foods,” said Dwayne Flowers, vice president, market operations, CareSource. “Affordable, safe housing is the foundation for better health, especially for older adults. We are grateful for the VOA and community partners that share our commitment to expanding access to quality housing and improving the overall well-being of our communities.”

Research shows that affordable, quality housing is linked to improved physical and mental health outcomes, including better management of chronic conditions and reduced hospitalizations. The new development offers older adults the opportunity to age in a supportive environment, while also alleviating some of the financial burdens that can prevent them from accessing health care.

“Access to safe, affordable housing is essential to good health,” said Rob Rogers, president and CEO of Volunteers of America Southeast. “Through our partnership with CareSource and Affordable Equity Partners, we are proud to provide older adults in Tift County the stability and support they need to live healthier lives.”

CareSource has made a total of $3.5 million in affordable housing investments across Georgia, including $2.5 million in partnership with the Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership to support the rehabilitation of homes in metro Atlanta.
