Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College proudly announces that Mike Tompkins has been sworn in as chief of police after 17 years of dedicated service to the college. The swearing-in ceremony took place Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. in Tift Hall on ABAC’s campus.

The ceremony was attended by Kerry Stallings, chief of police for the University System of Georgia (USG), and Xavier Williams, USG police inspector. Members of ABAC’s administration, Police Department, and the Tompkins family were also present.

Tompkins has been a cornerstone on ABAC’s campus since joining the Stallion community in 2008, consistently demonstrating leadership and professionalism. His appointment as chief of police is a natural step considering his unwavering dedication to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Douglas Chadwell, assistant chief of police at ABAC, praised Tompkins’ leadership qualities, stating:

“Chief Mike Tompkins has consistently demonstrated a steady, service-oriented approach to campus safety by prioritizing communication, consistency, and collaboration across departments. He is known for being accessible to students, faculty, and staff, and for addressing concerns promptly and professionally. During campus events and daily operations, Chief Tompkins has shown the ability to make sound decisions under pressure while keeping the broader needs of the college in mind. These qualities have earned him respect on campus and make him a strong fit for the role.”

As Chief of Police, Tompkins plans to lead ABAC’s efforts to maintain a secure campus environment while strengthening partnerships across the college community. ABAC Vice President of Finance and Operations Deidra Jackson expressed excitement for Chief Tompkins’ vision:

“One initiative I’m particularly excited about is Chief Tompkins’ plan to expand the department’s visibility and engagement across campus. Building stronger connections with students, faculty, and staff not only enhances safety but also fosters trust and collaboration—key elements of a thriving campus community.”
